What to Expect in a
Somatic Experiencing Session
Overview
A Gentle, Body-Led Process
A Somatic Experiencing session with Jarrah typically runs for 50–60 minutes. Sessions are unhurried, collaborative and always led by what feels safe and manageable for your nervous system.
You don't need to prepare anything in advance. Jarrah will guide the process. Most people find sessions feel calmer and more spacious than they expected.
Arriving & Settling
The session begins with a few minutes of simply arriving — noticing how you feel in your body, your breath, your general state. This isn't a formal exercise; it's simply slowing down enough to make contact with yourself before the work begins.
Checking In
Jarrah will ask briefly how you've been since the last session, and what feels most present or relevant for you today. This is a gentle orientation, not an interrogation — there's no pressure to have a prepared answer.
Working with Sensation
The heart of SE is tracking bodily sensation. Jarrah may guide your attention to where you feel something physically — tightness, warmth, movement, heaviness — and together you'll explore what those sensations are doing. This process is slow and titrated, never overwhelming.
Resourcing
SE works by alternating between experiences that feel challenging and experiences that feel settling or positive. Jarrah will frequently invite you to notice what feels good, safe or comfortable in your body — this is called "resourcing" and is fundamental to the approach.
Closing & Integration
Towards the end of the session, Jarrah will gently guide you back to a settled state. You'll have a few minutes to reorient before leaving. It's normal to feel a little spacey after SE — Jarrah may suggest you avoid rushing straight into demands afterwards.
